Almost the definition of “gallows humor, “25 Minutes to Go” is about a man who is about to be hung in front of the entire town. Johnny Cash covered the song on his 1965 album Sings the Ballads of the True West, and also performed the song on his famous At Folsom Prison live album. The narrator of the song is facing his impending doom in real time, singing about the events as the clock ticks down- “Well they’re buildin’ the gallows outside my cell / I got 25 minutes to go / And the whole town’s waitin’ just to hear me yell / I got 24 minutes to go.” Funnily enough, this song was written by Shel Silverstein, the popular author whose books you probably read in elementary school.
